Chapter 12: Ten Weeks

Clayton came back at seven the next morning, in the same clothes, on foot.

He had left the rental car in Kisumu.

He walked through the gate, past the queue, and sat down on the bottom step of the clinic porch with a plastic folder on his knees.

I was on the porch with my coffee and Wanjiru, and we both watched him.

"I walked from the bus stop," he said. "It's eleven miles."

"That's a long way."

"I wanted it to be a long way."

He opened the folder.

It was the divorce papers, flattened and creased, each page initialed in blue ink, and the last page signed.

"I read them last night," he said. "All of them. In the hotel. I'd never read them. I sent the second set back without opening it."

"I know."

"There was a note on the first set, on the counter, in your handwriting. It said, I'm not angry. I'm just done. Please let me go."

"I remember."

"I kept that one in my sock drawer for three years." He laughed, and it came out wet. "I read it every night for a week, and then I decided you were being dramatic."

He held out the folder.

I took it.

My name was on the first page, and his was on the last, in a hand I knew better than my own.
