Chapter 16: The Note Comes Due

Cillian's POV

Penelope's phone went to voicemail for the twelfth time, and I stopped calling.

The hospital's lawyer had reached me instead.

Neil had pulled Hattie's insurance at midnight and withdrawn his consent for the noon operation.

I stood in the back of the gala hotel's car park, and for the first time in six years I felt my control go.

I did not call my board.

I did not call my own lawyer.

I told my driver to take me to the Garner Group tower.

It was three in the morning, and the lobby guard knew me from the news.

"Mr. Garner is on the fortieth floor," he said. "He told me no visitors."

"I'm the visitor," I said.

I rode up alone.

Neil sat behind his desk in his shirtsleeves with the lights off and a bottle of scotch open at his elbow.

The city lay behind him in the glass.

He looked up and smiled.

"I wondered who'd come first," he said. "I thought it would be a cop."

I crossed the carpet, took the folder from under my arm and laid it on his desk.

"Read it."

"What is it?"

"A note on this building."

He pulled it closer and read the first page.

His face stayed bland.

At the second page his smile went.

"You bought my loan."

"The night before my wedding."

"From the bank?"

"From the bank."

"You can't call it without cause."

"There's a clause for a change in ownership of the controlling shares," I said. "You'll have one by morning."
