Chapter 7: Ask the Date
Sylvie's POV
The roof of the Sterne had a locked door, and Nathaniel's night clerk had left it unlocked.
I took that as a sign I would think about later.
I stood by the railing at midnight with my phone left on his desk downstairs, in a drawer, under a tart box.
Down on Boylston the Holloway Grand glowed gold in the rain.
My left hand throbbed under the bandage.
I kept thinking about his thumb on the inside of my wrist, and then I kept not thinking about it, and that went on for most of an hour.
The roof door opened.
Gretchen came out in jeans and a man's grey sweatshirt with the hood up.
She did not have her hair pinned.
It was down around her shoulders, and she looked younger than thirty-one, and more tired than anyone I had ever seen.
"You came," I said.
"I took the service elevator. Harrison thinks I'm asleep." She stopped a few feet from me. "I have forty minutes. Then the nurse calls to say my father's pulse has changed."
"Your father is really dying."
"Yes."
"I'm sorry."
"I know you are." She pushed the hood back. "That's why I couldn't stand it. You're sorry for a woman who is wearing your ring."
I did not say anything.
She held her left hand out and looked at it.
"I'd cut it off if I could," she said. "It's too tight. Helen fished it out of his glass herself and put it on me before dessert."
"I want to know when she told you about the week."
"Sunday night. The night before." Gretchen met my eyes. "She came to my father's room at the hospice and sat on his bed and held his hand."
