Chapter 18: A Woman With a Tray
On Wednesday afternoon a heavy man in a Houston suit sat down at Sasha's bar and asked for me by name.
Sasha set a glass of water in front of him and looked at me through the pass-through.
I wiped my hands on a bar towel and came out.
"I'm Odette Cordero."
"I know. A young man from your mother-in-law's Sunday table sent me your address." He did not shake my hand. "I am owed four hundred thousand dollars by your husband."
"I'm not responsible for that."
"I'm not asking you to be." He folded his hands on the bar. "He told me the Larkin house secures my money. Is that true?"
I took the folder out of my bag and laid out the first photograph.
It was the state filing for Calloway Capital.
He read it twice. Then he took a pair of glasses out of his jacket, put them on, and read it a third time.
"His name," he said. "On the lender."
"Sole member."
I set down the second photograph, and the third.
Papa's yellow letter. Rafael's note about page four.
The man did not say anything for a long time.
"I have been told that this house was the family's gift to a charity," he said. "That the money would come out of a sale."
"The house was never for sale. It was never his."
"Eight of us," he said slowly. "Eight men who each put in money because he said the house backed it."
"Then you should all be in the room on Saturday."
"We will be." He took off his glasses. "I'm told you've been barred."
"By the host committee."
"I'm a donor, Mrs. Cordero. The host committee can bar you. It cannot bar my guest."
He stood and put a card on the bar.
"Table one. I'll be at the door at a quarter to seven. Wear something you can stand in for three hours."
