Chapter 15: Declan's Price

Declan's POV

Emme found me in the studio kitchen at seven, before anyone else was in.

She had the girl's grey drive in her fist, and she'd slept maybe three hours.

"I made a copy," she said. "Bea has one. The girl has the original."

"Good."

"I need to ask you something, and I need you to not be nice about it."

I put the coffee down.

"Ask."

"Why are you doing this?" She kept her eyes on the drive. "Is it for Tobin? Because if you're helping me for him, I'd rather know. I can take it."

I stared at her.

She had her sleeves pulled over her knuckles and her chin up, braced for the worst answer.

She actually believed I might say yes.

"Emme, look at me."

She did.

"Tobin would have wanted this. That's true, and it's not why." I stepped in close enough to see the grey in her eyes. "I didn't see you for four years, and I thought about you every day of them. I walked into your lobby the Monday after the gala because I'd been waiting for a reason, and I hated that it took that."

"You could have called."

"I know. I should have." I kept my hands at my sides. "Nobody sent me. Nobody asked me. I came because I wanted to be where you were. I chose it. I'm choosing it now."

Her eyes went bright.

She put the drive down on the counter very carefully.

Then she took a fistful of my sweater and pulled my mouth down to hers.

It was a short kiss and a fierce one, over almost before I had my arms around her.
