Chapter 12: Morning, Big Brother

I stood in the gray kitchen in one of his shirts, holding a glass of water, and stared at the photo.

Bingham. Brett's father.

The boy beside him had Quincy's straight nose and Quincy's dark, serious eyes.

I didn't hear him come in.

"You're up," Quincy said behind me.

His voice was thick with sleep. He had pulled on gray sweatpants and nothing else.

"Why do you have a picture of Brett's father?" I asked.

He stopped.

I turned around.

He stood in the kitchen doorway with one hand on the frame, and his face was a mask. I had seen it once before, in the library, when I said Brett's name.

"June," he said. "Let me explain before..."

A key turned in the front door.

We both heard it.

The lock clicked open, and the door swung wide, and someone came in whistling.

"Quincy? You up? Dad wants..."

Brett stopped in the hall.

He was in his team jacket with a cardboard tray of coffees in one hand and a manila envelope in the other. He looked at Quincy's bare chest.

He looked at me, in the kitchen, in Quincy's shirt.

The tray tilted in his hand.

"You have a key," I said, because it was the only thing I could think of.

"Since I was twelve," Brett said. His voice was flat. "He gave it to me. He gives everybody what they need."
