Chapter 7: All Four

They went up the stairs in single file, and nobody said a word.

Noah's heart hammered the whole way.

The long room was dim, with one lamp lit by William's bed.

William shut the double doors and turned the key.

Troy dropped onto the end of the bed, Henry sat on the desk chair, and Noah stood in the middle of the carpet with his hands at his sides.

He had thought about this for years, and he had no idea what to do with his arms.

"Okay," he said. "Somebody say something."

"I'll start," William said.

He stayed standing by the door.

"I wanted you before the wedding.

"I saw you at the engagement dinner, folding napkins into swans because you couldn't sit still.

"I thought, that's the one.

"And then my father said you were going to be my brother."

His jaw worked.

"I've felt sick about it for two months."

"Me too," Henry said quietly. "Since the dinner. I'm the one who keeps track of everything. I waited for the days until you moved in."

Troy gave a short laugh.

"I thought I was the only one," he said. "I thought you three were too good for me. I sit behind you in class and spend the whole hour memorizing the back of your neck."

Noah stared at all of them.

"You've all..."

"Yes."

"All three of you."

"Yes," said William.

Noah sat down hard on the edge of William's bed.

All week he had told himself that each touch was kindness.

Troy was friendly with everyone, and Henry was thorough, and William was protective of everything that came into his house.

He had been so careful to explain it away.
