Chapter 6: Henry's Agenda
Henry Bennet had run the student union for two years, and he had never wanted to throw a complaint in the shredder so badly.
He read it twice at his desk before the hearing.
Maya had printed it on cream paper.
She had attached the gossip page post, a photo of a closing door and a note about conduct in university buildings.
She had signed it with a little heart over the i.
Henry took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
He had made a rule for himself the week before Noah arrived, and he had broken it in a dressing room on Monday morning with his knees on a velvet carpet.
He did not regret it.
He regretted that Maya had a camera.
The hearing room filled at four.
Twelve board members sat along a long table, and a crowd of students stood at the back.
Maya sat in the front row in a blue blazer with her hands folded.
Noah sat three seats down from her.
He looked pale and very steady, in his one good shirt.
William stood by the wall with his arms crossed, and Troy was beside him, still in his swim jacket.
Henry banged the gavel once.
"We have one item," he said. "A conduct complaint against a student, filed by Maya Rhodes. The complaint alleges inappropriate behavior in a university building."
"I'd like to read it," Maya said sweetly.
"You may. Briefly."
She stood and read two paragraphs about discretion and standards, and the family name, and how hard it must be for someone from a different background to understand what the Bennet name expects.
