Chapter 5: Swim Team Showers

Troy found him in the hall outside Statistics the next morning and took his backpack off his shoulder.

"Come to practice," Troy said. "Tonight. Six."

"Why?"

"Because I said so, and because you need to see something."

The natatorium smelled of chlorine and wet concrete.

Noah sat in the bleachers with his coat on while sixteen swimmers hung off the pool wall, dripping and loud.

Troy hauled himself out of the water in his racing suit, and walked down the deck with the whole team watching.

He did not shout.

He took a phone from a boy's bag, held up the gossip page, and read the caption aloud.

"Billionaire's new stepson. Still works the register."

A few of the boys laughed uncertainly.

"That's Noah," Troy said. "He's my stepbrother. He gets up at five and bakes bread for everybody in my house, and he's better in Stats than all of you combined. Anybody who calls him baker's boy again can swim lanes with me until they puke."

Nobody laughed this time.

"Understood?"

"Yes, Captain," said sixteen voices.

Troy gave the phone back, then looked up at Noah in the bleachers and winked.

Noah's face went hot, and he could not stop smiling.

Practice ended at seven.

The locker room emptied in a rush of towels and shouting, and then it was quiet.

Noah was waiting by the pool when Troy came back, wet and shirtless, with a towel around his hips.

"You didn't have to do that," Noah said.

"Yes, I did."

Troy took his hand and led him through the locker room to the team showers, a long tiled room with a dozen heads along the wall.

He turned the nearest one on and pulled Noah under it with his clothes still on.
