Chapter 4: After Hours
Noah did not answer Maya's text.
He typed three replies, deleted all of them, and went to class with flour still under his nails.
By noon it was everywhere.
A campus gossip page had posted a photo of him in his mother's shop apron, behind the counter, with a tray of rolls.
The caption read: Billionaire's new stepson. Still works the register. Guess money can't buy class.
Two girls in the lecture hall looked at him and whispered.
A boy in the hallway said, "Hey, baker's boy, can I get a croissant?" and his friends laughed.
Noah kept walking.
He had been called worse across the counter by customers who wanted their change in coins.
But his face burned all the way to the quad.
At four, a text arrived from a number he had saved that morning.
It was from William: Student club council office, third floor of the union. Come when you're done.
The office was at the end of a hall, behind a door with a brass plate.
Inside, William sat behind a big desk with a lamp on and his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
Stacks of papers were squared into piles.
He stood when Noah came in, locked the door behind him, and leaned against it.
"I saw the post," William said.
"It's fine."
"It isn't."
"It's a picture of my mom's shop. It's true. I do work the register."
"I know." William's voice was low and even. "I'm having it taken down by Friday. That isn't why I asked you here."
"Then why did you?"
William did not answer.
He crossed the room and stopped close enough that Noah could smell his soap.
"You walked into the bathroom last night, and you let Troy have you, and I stood there and did nothing," William said. "I haven't stopped thinking about it. I don't know how to ask for things, Noah. I'm better at running meetings."
