Chapter 18: The Pen
The interview room hadn't changed.
Same table, same two chairs, same gray light through the little window.
The detective sat down across from me and didn't open a notebook.
He took a ballpoint pen out of his inside pocket and laid it on the table.
He pushed it toward me with one finger.
"That's the pen," he said.
I looked at it.
"I carried it for nine days," he said. "It got heavier every one."
"I believe you."
"I'd like to write it down now. All of it. Will you let me?"
"No."
He flinched.
"Not in here," I said. "The people who need to hear it are outside."
"Mrs. Hargrove..."
"But you can talk first."
He rubbed his face with both hands.
"Nine years," he said. "My wife had surgery, and the bills were over three hundred thousand."
"A man said a friend of the department wanted to help."
"The Sartori boss."
"It came every month in an envelope. I told myself I'd never be asked to do anything for it."
