The cold room was under the east wing, where the pack house kept its meat.

I went alone.

Torin wanted to come, and I told him the babies needed one of us awake.

The guard unlocked the iron door and stayed on the stairs.

Rhoda sat on an upturned crate in her dark wool coat, with her silver hair unpinned.

Her pearls were gone.

Without them her neck looked thin and old.

"You came," she said.

"You have a minute."

"I have a great many things, Morven. A minute is not one of them." She smiled. "Sit."

"No."

"Then stand, and listen to the thing no one ever told you."

I stayed by the door.

"The Grimshaw family keeps one story that is not for outsiders," she said. "My husband told it to me the night we married."

"I don't care about your husband."

"You'll care about this."

She folded her hands in her lap.

"Cedric's great-grandmother was the white wolf. The Luna who walked into the river."

"I know. You said."

"I didn't say why." Her voice dropped. "She had the whole pack on her, like you. Black Fir was starving, feral, and she decided to hand them back, rope by rope."

"The same as me."

"The same. She took in the Alpha's family last, at the root."

"And?"

"And her husband stood on the bank with the pack, watching her go under. He loved her more than his life. At the last moment he could not bear it."

I did not move.

"He reached through the bond and took her back," Rhoda said softly. "He gripped. He pulled her out of the river with a rope that was never his to pull."

"She lived?"
