Chapter 15: The Cousin

"Where is he now?" I said.

"I don't know." Santiago was already dialing. "My men lost him in the taxi line."

We didn't finish anything on that porch.

He went inside and spoke Spanish into his phone in Peg's hallway, low and fast, for twenty minutes.

When he came out, his face had closed.

"Two of my men stay on this house," he said. "One stays with you. Every shift. Every drive."

"No."

"Wynn."

"I spent two hundred and ten days with a man outside my door. I'm not doing it again because your cousin bought a plane ticket."

"He's not here to sightsee."

"Then he can come and say what he's here for," I said. "In daylight. I'm not hiding in Gary."

Peg came out of the kitchen with a dish towel over her shoulder.

"She's not hiding," Peg said. "But your boys can have the couch. I'm not an idiot."

For five days, nothing happened.

I worked my nights.

Santiago's youngest man sat in the ER waiting room every shift in his dark coat and read the same magazine about boats.

The tech started bringing him pretzels.

On the sixth morning, the first Tuesday of December, I came off shift at seven.

It had snowed in the night. The ambulance bay was slush and orange salt and two rigs backed in with their doors open.

The tech walked out with me, complaining about his feet.
