Chapter 10: A Side

The hospital let Posy go at nine that night with a bottle of anti-nausea pills and a warning about fluids.

Constance was waiting at the exit with her car keys in her hand.

"Posy, dear," she said, in the voice she used for donors. "Come home. I've made up the guest room."

Posy stopped walking.

I stood a few feet behind her with Yvette, and Elliot stood a few feet behind me.

"I don't have a home," Posy said. "Dalton sold it."

"It's not sold yet."

"It's your house, Constance. You put the sign in the yard."

"It's your family's house." Constance smiled gently. "Where else do you think you'll go? You have no one, sweetheart. You've never had anyone. That's why we took you in."

Posy flinched at it.

It was the cruelest sentence I had heard that day, and she had said it kindly.

"She has me," I said.

Constance turned her head slowly.

"I don't believe we've asked you."

"You don't have to. She's coming with me."

"Willa, you're the other woman in this."

"I was the other woman for a year," I said. "I just didn't know it."

Behind me, Elliot spoke for the first time.

"Constance."

She looked at him.

For fifteen months, I realized, she had probably looked at him like that, as the stepson who signed things.

"Next week the board votes on funding your charity luncheon," Elliot said. "I'll vote yes. I'll also vote to take your name off the company's letterhead if this week's behavior reaches the press."
