Chapter 21: The Committee
Constance's living room had six donors on three cream sofas, a silver tray of lemon cookies and a binder for the winter gala.
Posy let herself in with the key she had never given back.
She stood in the arch of the doorway in her gray sweater with a manila envelope against her chest.
Constance looked up from the binder.
"Posy, dear," she said brightly. "What a surprise. We're in committee. Why don't you wait in the kitchen?"
"I'll wait here."
"Don't be difficult."
"I'm not difficult." Posy came three steps into the room. "I'm here to say a few things, and I'd like your friends to hear them."
Six pairs of eyes went from her to Constance.
Constance's smile held.
"The poor girl has been under tremendous strain," she said to the sofas. "The pregnancy. Please excuse us a moment."
"No," Posy said.
She set the envelope on the coffee table, between the cookies and a gold pen.
"This is my petition for divorce. A clerk stamped it at nine this morning. And this one," she laid down the second sheet, "is a letter giving up any claim I have, or my baby has, to the Lowell family trust."
"You can't do that," Constance said.
"I did it."
"Posy, you have no idea what that money means. You have no family. You have no job. You were a scholarship girl in a borrowed blazer, and I made you a Lowell."
"You made me a signature."
One of the donors set down her teacup.
It was the silver-haired woman from the luncheon who had put her purse beside the empty chair.
