Chapter 9: The Reason Column
Nobody at the long table moved.
The widow set her spoon down.
The B shift stood along the counter with their arms folded.
Jesse wiped his hands on a towel, slowly, and put it over his shoulder.
"Route them how?" he said.
Brooke turned her tablet around so the whole kitchen could see.
A map of Milwaukee covered in little colored dots.
"Every 911 call gets a TenScore number," she said brightly. "The highest scores get the closest rig. It's the same engine as the hospital queue. It's going to save so many minutes."
"Whose minutes?" I said.
Brooke's eyes slid to me.
"Casey. I didn't see you there."
"I'm hard to miss. I'm in a brace."
The chief cleared his throat. He was a heavy, gray-haired man.
"Brackett, this is a pilot. City council likes it. Your rig's got the best response numbers in the district, so they want you first."
"No," Jesse said.
The chief blinked.
"I'm not asking yet. I'm telling you what's coming."
"And I'm telling you now, so nobody wastes a meeting." Jesse looked at the long table. At the widow in her husband's parka. At the parents of the boy with the broken arm. "I won't run it on my rig. Not now. Not as a pilot. Not ever."
"Lieutenant," Brooke said sweetly, "it's software. It's just a tool."
"So's a bone saw." Jesse didn't raise his voice once. "Depends who's holding it and what they're cutting. You put a price on the front of the line, ma'am. I've been carrying people to the back of it for a month."
"Jesse," the chief said.
"With respect, Chief. Write me up if you want. I'll sign it."
Two of the B shift stood up straighter behind him.
