Chapter 20: Madison's Price

She wanted to meet the next night, in the bar of a hotel in Mayfair.

"Don't go," Zoe said, at breakfast. "It's a trap. It's literally a trap. She slapped you on camera."

"She sounded scared."

"Snakes sound scared. That's their whole thing."

Oliver didn't tell me not to go.

He said he was driving me, and that was the end of it.

At a quarter to ten he parked the van on a side street off Berkeley Square, between two cars that cost more than the arch.

"I'll be here," he said.

"You could come in."

"I'd be the only man in there in a flannel shirt. They'd think I'd come to fix the boiler."

The bar was all dark wood and green velvet, with a pianist nobody was listening to.

Madison was in a corner booth in a cream coat she hadn't taken off.

She'd been crying.

She'd fixed it, but not well.

In front of her was a glass of white wine, and on the table beside it, in a small velvet dish, my ring.

The square sapphire on the thin gold band.

I sat down across from her and didn't touch it.
