Chapter 23: Five Percent
Three weeks later Odette came into Rise & Salt at six in the morning and stood in line like a customer.
She was in jeans and a gray sweater, with her hair loose.
The sweater was not green.
When she reached the counter I slid a cinnamon roll across it on a plate.
"On the house," I said.
"I'd like to pay for it."
"You can't. You're my sister."
She laughed, startled, and there it was, the small gap between her front teeth.
"Sit down," I said. "I have something for you."
The paper was in the drawer under the register, where I had kept it since the morning Emmett put it in my hand.
I laid it on the table beside her plate.
"Five percent of Lowry Freight," I said. "Our father signed it, and the lawyer signed it, and I signed it last night. It's yours, with no conditions."
She looked at it for a long time without touching it.
"The judge gave me probation," she said. "Eighteen months. I've been told I'm lucky."
"You are."
"I put a brick through your window, Tilda. You can't give me a company."
"I'm giving you your father's share. You can sell it, or you can come and sit on my board and be annoying."
Her mouth shook.
"I'd be so annoying," she said.
"I know. I've met you."
She picked up the paper then, with both hands, and read the name at the bottom three times.
She did not cry.
She ate the cinnamon roll in four enormous bites instead, and told me it was the best thing she'd had in her life.
That Sunday we drove to the cemetery with a thermos and a paper bag.
