Chapter 23: Six Thousand People

Brody told me at six in the morning, in the kitchen, before I had a mug in my hand.

"Kayla was at the rink gate yesterday after practice," he said.

"Before or after Cody's?"

"Before. I didn't tell you last night because I wanted to see her again first." He held up a hand. "That's an omission, and I'm calling it one. I'm sorry."

I put the mug down.

"Tell me now."

"She said she's pregnant. She said it's Cody's, and she'd be happy to raise it with him, except that he is miserable." He kept his eyes on mine. "She said I could fix it."

"How?"

"By coming back."

The toaster popped, and neither of us moved.

"She said if I came back, she'd tell Cody she lost the baby. Quietly, no fuss, and he'd be free and I'd be hers." His jaw was tight. "I said no. She said then she'd announce it somewhere public and make sure nobody ever got him away from her."

"She said that out loud."

"On the rink steps. With nobody close enough to hear."

"Did you record it?"

"My phone was in my bag." He closed his eyes. "I'm going to carry it in my hand from now on."

I stared at him.

Under all the fury, there was something warm in my chest.

A month ago he would have kept this and handled it by himself.

"Thank you for telling me," I said.

"That's the term."
