Chapter 13: What He Heard

"Yes," Luca said.

It came out rough.

"Say the rest."

"I knew."

Bridget had gotten out of the Civic and stood with one hand on the open door, not coming closer.

I kept my eyes on Luca.

"I want the whole thing," I said. "Where you were, what you heard, and how long you sat on it."

"Easter, two years ago. I was at my mother's stove."

"Gianna told me that part."

"Then I'll tell you what she didn't." He kept his hands open at his sides. "Dante said you were easy to keep, that you'd stay because you had nowhere else to go. He said your mother's money would be the start of everything."

The rain ran off the awning between us.

"He said it so softly," Luca said. "He was almost kind about it."

"And you stood there."

"I stood there with a spoon in my hand."

"For two years."

"Yes."

My throat hurt, and I was angry that it did.

"You sat at that table every Sunday," I said. "You passed me the bread and the wine. You watched them laugh at me in Italian, and you watched me laugh along so nobody would see I was lost."

"I did."

"Did you know what I was doing at those dinners?"

"You were being polite."

"I was counting the words I knew," I said. "Ti amo, amore, grazie. I counted them all night, so I'd have something to do with my face."
