Chapter 17: The Falls
I had him on his back on the granite with my mouth on him before the sun cleared the cypress.
The rock was warm already, a long smooth shelf above the river.
Below us the falls ran loud over their steps.
We had left my father's house at five without waking him, or so we had both pretended.
Nobody else was on this stretch of the park.
The gravel lot was a quarter mile behind us, and the trail lay empty.
"Greta," Emilio said, to the sky.
I hummed around him in answer.
He had shed his jacket and his shirt on the rock and lay there in his trousers, open.
His hands were flat on the granite where I had told him to keep them.
I took him deeper, slow, and ran my tongue along the vein on the underside.
His hips lifted a fraction of an inch.
"Stay down," I said, with my lips against him.
"Yes, ma'am."
"You taste like the river," I said.
"I haven't been in the river," he said.
"You will be."
The first sliver of sun cut over the trees and laid itself across his chest and the scar on his ribs.
I looked at him in the light, with my mouth wet and my hair in my eyes.
His whole body was drawn tight, his throat working, his eyes on me.
I lifted my head and wrapped my fist around him and stroked him slowly.
"Tell me what you want," I said.
"For you to do exactly what you're doing."
"Liar."
He laughed, breathless.
"For you to do it faster," he said.
"No."
I bent and took him again.
I held him at the back of my throat for a moment, and I felt him shudder from his heels to his hair.
He swore in Spanish, low and long.
I pulled off before he could spill and sat back on my heels in the sun.
My own breath was ragged.
I had a different thing to say, and I had not said it to anyone in four years.
"Take it," I said.
