Chapter 17: The Parking Lot
Rory was already pulling on his boots.
"Stay here," he said.
"No."
"He's at the end of the lane."
"He's gone," I said, and it was true, because the headlights were moving, slow and unhurried, back toward the road.
Rory went out anyway.
He stood in the middle of the gravel in his undershirt until the taillights were small.
Then he came back, picked up my phone and photographed the screen.
"Sheriff gets this in the morning," he said.
"Good."
"And you stay home tomorrow."
"I'm going to work," I said.
He turned around slowly.
"Ada."
"I have a shift at the animal hospital."
"The vet is short, and I told her I'd cover until the end of the month."
"You own eleven hundred acres."
"And I have a desk and a phone and a dozen clients I like," I said. "I'm not giving them up because of him."
It was the one place in five years where nobody had called me anything but my name.
Rory looked at me for a long moment.
Then he sighed through his nose.
"I'll drive you," he said. "I'll pick you up. I'll sit in the lot with a thermos."
