Chapter 19: The Mother-in-Law
Rory drove us to the gate in the truck with the wipers going.
I got out alone.
The rain came down cold and steady, the same rain as the night I walked out of the Tallmadge driveway.
Phyllis stood on the gravel with her cardigan soaked through and her hair flat against her skull.
She had no umbrella.
She had no pearls on, and without them her neck looked bare and old.
"Ada," she said.
It was the first time she had ever said my name without a lesson in it.
"What do you want?"
"A county man nailed a paper to my front door at noon," she said. "The neighbors came out on their porches."
"That's the notice."
"I know what it is." She swallowed.
"Austin's cousin said I could stay in the guest room if I told the judge you set a trap."
"And?"
"I told him to go to hell."
I didn't say anything.
"I have forty dollars and a bank card that doesn't work," Phyllis said.
"I took a cab to Rhinebeck and walked the rest. I didn't know where else a person goes."
