"No," Peter said.
"He'll take me there whether I agree or not. I'd rather walk in with my eyes open."
"The dock light is going to be out, Nina."
"Then I'll bring a flashlight."
He did not laugh.
He stared at the ceiling for a long time with his jaw working.
"Then I follow you," he said. "Ten minutes behind, lights off, with my phone in my hand."
"And the fob?"
"Is yours."
I pressed it into my palm and felt the small cover slide under my thumb.
"All right," I said.
Two days later Geneva found me alone in the kitchen.
Tobias was at the office, and the housekeeper had gone out for groceries, and the whole townhouse was quiet except for a clock.
I stood at the counter making tea for one.
Heels came down the hall, fast, and stopped behind me.
I did not turn, because a deaf woman would not have known.
