Chapter 24: Tuesday
On Saturday morning the clinic on Fleet Avenue had a new autoclave, a new waiting-room rug and fifty-one patients.
Bennett came at nine with his sleeves rolled and stacked boxes by the freezer without once speaking.
The retired nurse watched him do it, and moved a stack six inches to the left, and he said, "Yes, ma'am," and moved it back.
"You may talk," she told him.
"Thank you."
"A little," he said.
He glanced at me across the room, across the folding tables and the line of coughing toddlers, and I gave him the smallest nod.
He went back to the boxes with something in his shoulders that hadn't been there in five years.
Dess arrived at noon with doughnuts and Judge in a carrier.
She had also brought a boy of eight she had defended on a shoplifting charge, who now wanted to be a lawyer.
"I'm going to be a doctor too," he said.
"Pick one," Dess said.
"Why?"
I laughed.
"You don't have to," I told him.
