Chapter 4: Check Your Phone
Before I opened the car door, I called the police non-emergency line from the end of my street.
"I may need an officer at my address in about half an hour," I told the dispatcher. "My husband's family is staging something against me. I'm seven months pregnant."
She took the address and said an officer would be sent on request.
Then I pressed record on my phone in the driveway and slid it into my coat pocket.
I went in.
Lacey was on the living room couch, crying loudly.
Marilyn knelt in front of her, holding a bag of frozen peas against Lacey's left ankle.
"There she is," Marilyn said, without standing. "You look worn out, dear. It's the hormones. Are you happy now?"
"Happy about what?"
"Don't play innocent!" Lacey wailed. "You pushed me down the stairs this morning! I could have lost the baby!"
"I wasn't home this morning."
I had left the house at seven to meet Bea, and the front hall camera had logged me going out.
Bradley came out of the kitchen.
His face was a stranger's, flat and cold.
He looked at his watch, which is what he does when he lies.
"My mother saw you do it," he said.
"Marilyn wasn't here either. She pulled into the driveway five minutes ago."
"I saw you," Marilyn said, and did not blink. "I will swear to it under oath."
I looked at the three of them.
Then I understood that this was not a mistake.
It was a rehearsal.
They were building the story of the jealous, unstable pregnant wife, and they were building it out loud in my living room to see whether it held.
