Chapter 12: The Man Who Could Walk

Three cars stopped in the gravel lot, and the lead one was my father's.

Leland's sedan came next.

The third was a patrol car, with two officers in it and no sirens.

I stepped out of the side door with Simon at my shoulder and four of his men fanned out behind us.

Cecily climbed out of Leland's back seat with a bandage on each wrist.

She saw me, and she stopped.

"Imogen?"

"You look surprised."

"I thought they'd..." She caught herself. "I thought you were still tied up."

"I was, for about ten minutes."

My father came across the gravel at a fast, angry walk.

"What is the meaning of this? Leland called me from a clinic. He said you'd been kidnapped."

"I was."

"Then why are you standing here with that man?"

"Because he was my mother's friend, and he came when I called," I said. "Which is more than I can say for you."

Hugh rolled up beside Leland in his chair, one of the officers walking at his side.

"Let's all calm down," Hugh said. "Officer, the poor girl has been through a terrible night."

"I'd like to hear what she has to say," the officer said.

I took my phone out of my coat.

"Cecily's assistant left her phone on a sideboard," I said. "I read a message on it the night of the dinner. It said the dock was ready for the fourteenth, same terms, four million as agreed."

"That's a lie," Cecily said.

"It also said to confirm that I'd ride with Leland and the man in the chair. The client wanted me in the car."
