Chapter 29: Montauk Highway
I stared at the empty space until Nicholas grabbed my hand.
"Truck," he said.
We ran down the long drive past the arriving cars, past the guard at the gate, onto the road.
Nicholas had the engine running before my door was shut.
I called my mother.
It rang once and went to voicemail.
"Her phone's still locked in its pouch," I said. "They went out the service drive. They never passed the gate."
"Call the driver."
I called him.
Busy.
"He's on with the hospital," I said. "He'd be calling ahead."
"Then call 911."
I did.
I told the dispatcher a gray sedan was heading west on Montauk Highway from the bluffs with its brake line cut.
She asked me how I knew that.
"Because I watched the woman do it," I said.
The road ran along the top of the bluffs with the ocean on our left, dark blue going to black.
Nicholas drove the way he'd driven the mine road the first day, one hand on the wheel, except now the needle was past ninety.
"How far to the curve?" he said.
"Eleven miles from the house. Maybe less."
