Chapter 10: The Scarf

The knock came while I was still buttoning my blouse.

Hattie was already at the window with the curtain lifted.

"Odessa," she said. "Dalton. Both old men from the road. And one of Lucan's guards who looks like he'd like to throw someone in the creek."

I fixed my collar with shaking hands.

My lips still felt swollen.

I opened the door.

Lucan stood on the porch with his back to the wood, and he did not look at me.

He did not need to.

His scent reached me before the cold did.

"Eloise, dear," Odessa said. "Forgive the hour."

"What is it?"

"A small matter of law."

She held up the folded paper.

"Your signature at the Stone Book can only dissolve a marriage in which no bond remains," she said. "That is the oldest clause in the charter. If any bond exists, the divorce is void until the elders have confirmed it."

"I wrote that clause," I said. "Dalton and I have no bond."

"Do you?" the grain elder said carefully. "The Alpha tells us your bite scar remained. A scar is a bond."

"It's an ugly scar. It isn't a bond."

"Then it will be no trouble to show it," Odessa said.

She said it so gently that I almost missed what she had done.

Lucan stirred.

"She asked for a meeting at midnight and an inspection of a woman's body," he said. "In front of her husband. That is not law, that is humiliation."

"She isn't anyone's wife," Odessa said sweetly, "by your own argument."

She had him there, and she knew it.

I looked at the elders.

The oldest one would not meet my eyes.

I looked at Dalton.

He was pale and sweating, and his gaze kept sliding to his mother.
