Chapter 12: The Wound

I woke with his arm over my waist and sunlight across the quilt.

For a moment I did not know where I was.

Then I felt the warmth at the back of my neck, where his breath touched the mark, and everything came back.

I lay still and let it.

Six years of a husband who looked past my shoulder.

One night with a man who had looked at nothing else.

"You're awake," Lucan murmured into my hair.

"No."

"Your heartbeat says otherwise."

"Stop listening to it."

"I can't," he said. "It's very loud."

He kissed the top of my spine.

I turned over, and he propped himself on his elbow and looked down at me with his hair on end.

He seemed younger.

"Ask me again," I said.

"Is it morning?"

"It's morning."

"Eloise Garrow." His mouth twitched. "Are you mine?"

"I'll answer after you answer something for me."

The smile went away.

He sat up against the headboard and pulled the sheet over his hips, and I saw that he was bracing.

"Go on," he said.

"At the river," I said. "You told me it wouldn't be fine."

"Yes."

"I was twenty-two. I was getting married the next day to a man I'd met twice. A stranger told me it wouldn't be fine, and I walked up that bank and into the church anyway."

"I know."

"Why didn't you stop me?"

He did not answer right away.

"I didn't know what I'd done," he said at last. "I knew you were my mate. I did not know I'd marked you. A Lycan needs the night to rise, and I didn't see it."
