Chapter 19: Savannah's Choice
The council took forty minutes to decide what to do with Savannah.
I waited on the bench outside the hall with Lucan beside me and a cold cup of Hattie's coffee in my hands.
She came out alone, in her cardigan, with a paper folded in her fist.
"Well?" Hattie said.
"I give back the eight thousand to the winter fund." Savannah sat down at the far end of the bench. "I leave the territory by the end of the week, and I don't come back for a year. They said it's lighter than it could have been because I walked in on my own."
"That's fair," Lucan said.
"It's more than fair." She looked at her hands. "I know it is."
Nobody spoke for a while.
The evening smelled of woodsmoke and cut grass.
"I brought you tea," Savannah said finally, to me, not looking up. "That first night. I didn't want to, and I did it anyway."
"I know."
"I'm not asking you to say it's all right."
"Good," I said. "It isn't."
She nodded.
"I thought you'd be angrier," she said. "That's the worst of it. You were so decent that I wanted to be sick, and I did it anyway, because my sister was in a hospital bed and a woman told me it was nobody's fault."
"Where is your sister?"
"Eastern valley. Cascade General."
"I'm going to pay for her bills," I said. "That's not forgiveness. It's a loan. You owe me every dollar, no interest, and you'll send it with a letter every month so I know you're alive."
