Chapter 21: The Bond Spoken
The grass was cold under my cheek, and the moon was very bright.
I rolled over, and there was Torren's back.
He was standing over me with his left arm up, and the silver blade stood through the middle of his forearm.
It had gone in through the old burn webs and out the other side.
The point shone an inch from my eye, wet and red.
My father still had the hilt in both hands.
He pulled.
It did not move.
Torren had closed his scarred right hand around the blade itself, below the guard, and the edge was cutting into his palm.
He didn't look at it.
He didn't look at my father at all.
"Let go," Torren said, in the voice of a man asking for salt.
My father pulled again, hissing through his teeth.
Around us the field was dying, wolf by wolf.
Grey and brown bodies slowed, and swords came down, and the fighting drew back in a ragged ring to see.
