Chapter 20: The Attack
"Doors!" Gethin roared.
The first volley went up before the word had left his mouth.
Silver arrows hissed over the grass, and I was already running.
I did not run away.
I ran for the tent.
Behind it, stacked where the wounded had been laid down, stood nine pine doors.
Gethin and the shepherd's wife and the man with the silver scar hauled them up and planted them edge to edge in front of the canvas.
The arrows hit.
One came through the gap between two doors and buried itself in the ground at my feet.
Then I was inside, in lamplight and the smell of blood.
"Down!" Aldith shouted. "Everyone flat!"
Thirty wolves lay on thirty cots, and not one of them could stand.
Half were Ashfen's.
They stared up at the canvas as the shafts went through it, and I saw a boy of nineteen whisper the name of his mother.
I dropped on my knees between two cots with a hand on each chest.
"Nobody gets hit in here," I said. "Nobody. Say it."
