Chapter 19: The Truce Ground
I folded the grey silk into my sleeve and told no one but Torren.
Then I walked out onto the Truce Ground with my hands bare and my braid pinned up, so every wolf could see the mark.
The old battle line ran along the river on a flat green shelf of meadow, a stone's throw wide.
A hundred Ironmere wolves stood at the north end with their backs to the water.
At the south end stood a hundred of Ashfen's, in a ring around a grey horse.
Between them lay forty paces of trampled grass, and at its edge Aldith's tent glowed with lamplight.
Thirty cots lay inside, and I could hear the Ashfen wounded breathing.
The moon was still behind the cloud.
My father dismounted slowly, to give everyone time to look at him.
He wore a plain black coat, the gold ring on his hand, and a face of grave and tender sorrow.
I had seen him make that face at my mother's funeral.
