Chapter 20: Don't Sign
My father was sitting up when I came in, with the bed cranked high and a paper cup of ice chips in his hand.
The tube was gone from his nose, and his eyes were clear.
He looked like himself for the first time in a month.
"Close the door," he said.
I closed it.
"The attending cut my doses to a third two weeks ago. I have not been this sharp since September."
His mouth twitched.
"I'd forgotten how much I dislike being sedated."
"Dad."
"Sit down. I haven't got long, and I have a lot to say, and most of it is to my shame."
I sat on the edge of the bed and took his hand.
"I have known for a month," he said.
The room went very quiet.
"Known what?"
"About Sherilyn. About that boy."
He looked at the ice in his cup.
"I came down for a glass of water at two in the morning, and the study light was on."
I did not move.
"I stood in the hall and I listened, Thora. Not for long. Long enough."
His jaw worked.
"Then I went back upstairs and lay beside her, and I said nothing for three weeks."
"Why?"
"Because I was ashamed." He said it plainly.
