Chapter 5: Ten More
Armand lived on the second floor of a doctor's building on the Rue de la République, and on Tuesday he answered the door in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
He had a steady face and quiet hands.
He was the one man of the four whose stare I had never been able to read.
"You're early," he said.
"Four minutes."
"Four minutes is late for a man who counts." He stepped back. "Come in."
His flat was clean, almost bare.
A dining chair stood in the middle of the living room floor, and beside it, on a folded towel, lay a row of things.
A flat leather paddle. A wooden hairbrush. A thin cane, which made me swallow.
His hand.
"Page seven," he said. "You wrote that you want to know what pain does to you."
"Yes."
"You've never been hit."
"Auguste hit me yesterday. And Dominique's hand left a mark."
"That's touching." He shut the door. "That isn't what I do."
He pointed at the chair.
"Take off your skirt and underwear. Keep your shirt on. Kneel on the seat, and hold the back."
I did what he said.
The wood was cold against my knees, and the position pushed my ass up and out behind me.
I could feel him looking.
He walked around the chair slowly, and I heard him pick something up from the towel.
"I'll count," he said. "You'll count with me. If you lose count, we start again. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"I'm going to start light. I'll go up in steps. I will watch your breathing and the color of your skin, and I will know when you've had enough before you do."
"I won't tell you to stop."
"I know. That's why I watch."
His palm landed on my left cheek.
"One," he said.
"One," I said.
It was a warm, flat sting, even and clean.
He did the right cheek.
"Two."
"Two."
He gave me ten with his bare hand, one every two seconds, and by the fifth my skin was glowing and I had started to push back against it.
"Eleven," he said, and his voice changed. "Your hips are moving."
