Chapter 8: Lydia, Alone

"You're not coming in," I said.

"I know." Lydia held out the overnight bag. "I only wanted to give you this."

I took it, and it was heavier than I expected.

Inside were my toiletries, my prenatal vitamins and the phone charger I had left plugged in beside the mirror.

Nothing was missing.

It would have been easier if something had been.

"How did you find me?" I asked.

"Tyler shares his location with Clifton." She tucked her hair behind her ear. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to just show up."

"But you did."

"I did."

The white cardigan was clean, and her jeans had a crease in them from the shelf.

She carried a large iced coffee in one hand, and the straw had been chewed flat.

She noticed me looking, and smiled apologetically.

"I know, I shouldn't. My doctor says caffeine is hard on me. But the days after a big event I need it."

"What event?"

Her smile wobbled.

"Yesterday," she said.

"Right."

She breathed in.

"Autumn, I know you hate me."

"I don't know you well enough to hate you."

"I never wanted to hurt you." Her eyes filled. "I only wanted one day. One day where I felt like somebody's bride. And Clifton said you'd understand, because you're so good and so strong."
