Chapter 14: The Scar
At sixteen weeks Jamie could no longer see his own feet in the bath, and he was taking it personally.
"They're still there," Roman said, from behind him. "I checked."
"You're not helping."
"I washed them."
"That's different. That's a service."
The tub in the primary bathroom was cut into a floor of black stone, and it was big enough for both of them.
Jamie lay back against Roman's chest in water that smelled of cedar.
Candles Roman had refused to admit buying burned along the ledge, and the Pacific went from violet to black in the window.
Roman's arms were folded loosely around his middle.
His hands lay flat on the curve of his belly, and every few minutes his thumb moved on it, back and forth.
"She kicked," Roman said.
"That was gas."
"It was a kick."
"You can't feel a kick at sixteen weeks from the outside."
"I felt it."
"It's the water, Roman."
"It's a kick," Roman said, and put his mouth on the bite at the back of Jamie's neck.
Jamie shivered all the way to his toes.
The warm water lapped his ribs.
Behind him the big body pressed closer, and a hardness settled along his back, thick and patient and entirely unashamed.
"Good evening to you too," Jamie said.
"Ignore it."
"I'm not going to ignore it."
"Then I apologize to it."
Jamie turned his head, and Roman's mouth met his, slow and warm and tasting of the tea he'd made.
It was a long kiss.
It went on until the water cooled by a degree, and Jamie's hand came up and curled around the back of Roman's head.
He found, with his fingers, the line where the good skin gave way to the scar.
He knew exactly where it started, because he had measured it with his eyes for three months.
