Chapter 17: The Cliff
The drawer held two things, and Jamie read both of them standing at Roman's desk.
The first was a letter on the Aldecott Trust's letterhead, signed by Constance, dated the week of the spotting scare.
*Your arrangement is noted. Terms of release to follow at the birth.*
The second was a yellow legal pad covered in black pen.
It was a draft of page forty-one, and it had been written and rewritten a dozen times.
*The Omega shall never be removed from the Alpha's house*, said the first line, crossed out so hard the paper had torn.
*The Omega may not be removed from the Alpha's house by any person, trust or court*, said the fifth, and under it Roman had written, in a small hand, *sounds like a cage*.
The last draft, the one that had gone to Dennis, had a note beside it.
*3 a.m. I can't find a way to say "he's safe" that doesn't sound like "he's mine." Use the second one. Let him hate me. He'll be here to do it.*
Jamie turned the pad over and put it back in the drawer very gently.
Then he went and found Roman in the kitchen, and said nothing at all, and ate three spoonfuls of the stew.
It was rubbery.
It was also, for the first time, edible.
Four weeks later he lay in the nest against the glass wall of the primary suite, and could not get comfortable anywhere in the world.
Twenty-eight weeks.
The baby had her heel under his ribs.
Her head somewhere near his bladder, and a rhythm of her own that did not match his.
He had rebuilt the nest that afternoon.
It was bigger now, a wide soft ring of Roman's shirts and sweaters and the grey throw, with three body pillows and a long wedge Carly had stolen from the hospital.
