Chapter 22: Boxes
The van was orange, and Bernie drove it much too fast.
"Hold the wall," she shouted, taking the corner onto Congress Street on two wheels.
Agnes sat in the passenger seat with a clipboard.
"There is no wall," Perrin said from the back, hanging onto a strap. "We're in a van."
"Then hold the other thing."
Malcolm, wedged in beside him among the empty boxes, had gone slightly gray.
"Does she always drive like this?"
"Only when she's emotional," Perrin said.
"I'm not emotional," Bernie said, wiping her eyes on her sleeve. "It's the wind."
"The windows are shut," said Agnes.
The room above the laundromat took forty minutes to pack.
Perrin owned two crates of books, a lamp, a hot plate, nine mugs and an unreasonable quantity of cardigans.
He sat on the bare mattress while the others carried things down the stairs and looked at the window.
It was the same window he'd watched a tall man stand under in the rain.
Nobody could have told that from looking.
