Chapter 13: The Poor Box
A taxi had waited at the gate since before dawn, and nobody in the house would say who called it.
I saw it at six, through the Lean Room window, with its roof light on and its engine off.
Arthur slept on the floor behind me with his glasses folded on his chest.
His jacket was dry, and I hung it on the chair with the Release still folded in the inside pocket.
I did not wake him.
He had promised to tell me the rest after the vote, in order, with no price on it.
I had asked for that myself.
Now I wanted to know if the rest included a sheet of cream paper with his name on it.
At nine, Peter met us in the front hall in an ironed polo, with the little whale looking brave.
"I did something," Peter said. "It isn't on the program."
"I called a food bank from the library phone," Peter said. "A real one. They're sending a van."
Esther came out of the dining room in a lilac sweater with a tag that said six hundred and ten dollars.
"The Poor Box is only a box," Esther said. "We put in a thousand dollars each, and the lawyers send it somewhere."
