Chapter 13: The Codicil
The surgery took four hours.
Phat spent them on a plastic chair in the corridor outside the operating theatre, with Chak's blood drying brown on his forearms.
Mee stood against the opposite wall and did not sit.
Pim sat next to Phat, holding the brass key-case in both hands.
At the end of the second hour, she took the paper out again.
It was a folded sheet of paper gone soft at the creases and written in a spiky, old man's hand.
"Read it," she said.
"It isn't mine."
"It's the only copy. I've kept it against my skin since the funeral." She put it into his palm. "You're the one who counts things. Read it out."
Phat unfolded it under the fluorescent light.
His voice was not steady.
"'This is the last page of my will. Burn the other.'" He swallowed. "'The house, the docks and the name go to the one my son would die for. He will name that person to the board himself before the day he turns thirty-two. I do not choose for him. If he names no one, they go to my brother.'"
