Chapter 43: Saturday
The phone on the lounge table lit up before the agent had finished speaking.
The screen said R.A.
I answered it on speaker.
"Lenora." Royce's voice was ragged. "Is Kit with you? Did he call?"
"No. What happened?"
"I was in the truck outside the family center. The visit is supposed to end at noon."
I heard a car horn, then wind, then his breath.
"At ten-twenty she asked to take him to the restroom. The social worker let them go, because she always does."
"And?"
"At ten-fifty the social worker went in after them. The side door was propped open with a mop."
Micah swore very quietly.
"There's a camera on the back lot," Royce said. "I just watched it with the director."
"She walks him to a car. She's holding his hand."
He stopped.
"He looks at the camera, Lenora. Once, over his shoulder. Like he wants somebody to know."
