Chapter 44: The Orchard
I read the text once and handed the phone to the agent.
"He's in the orchard," I said. "With her. He can type."
"Then tell him how to help us," she said.
I typed with my numb fingers, which made it slower.
Call me. Put the phone in your shirt pocket with the screen against you. Don't say my name. Keep her talking.
Three dots appeared.
Then: Running it twice. Calling.
My phone rang a second later.
I answered it on speaker and set it on the arm of the chair.
Nobody in the lounge made a sound.
At first there was only wind, and the dry scrape of metal in dirt.
Then a woman's breathing, hard and fast.
"Hold the flashlight, baby," Eleanor's voice said.
She was out of breath, but it was the sugar voice, the one she used for the cameras.
"It's dark under these branches."
"It's noon, Mom," said Kit.
