Chapter 45: What She Was Digging For
Nobody in the lounge breathed.
On the phone, the footsteps stopped.
Then they started again, fainter, going down the hill with a woman who did not look back.
A long time went by.
"Len?" said a small voice, very near.
"I'm here."
"Is the line still open? I couldn't see."
"It's open, Kit."
"I think I did it right."
His voice shook all the way down.
"I asked questions, the way you did with the realtor. It was in the report."
"You did it better than I did."
"She was very angry."
"I know."
"I told her thank you because it's what I'd rather be," he said. "Is that wrong?"
Posy had both hands over her mouth.
Micah was crying again, silently, into the baby's blanket.
"No," I said. "It isn't wrong. Go to your dad."
He went.
I heard Royce say his name, once, and then the call ended.
By Tuesday we were home.
The doctors had let us leave early because Posy had written a schedule.
The baby slept in the aluminum crib, which Micah had tightened by hand every hour since we got in the door.
