Chapter 6: The Peace Offering

Calista came to the Ashfall camp at breakfast, alone, carrying a basket with a blue cloth over it.

"I brought you something," she called, from the edge of our firepit. "Please don't throw it at me."

Bram looked up from his skillet with an egg on the spatula.

Odessa did not look up at all.

The two brothers stopped eating.

I stood slowly, with a tin cup of coffee in my hand.

"We're not hungry," I said.

"It isn't food." Calista set the basket down and lifted the cloth.

Inside lay a silver flask and four small cups with painted flowers.

"It's my mother's honey tea," she said. "You used to love it. I wanted us to start again properly, before tomorrow, so nobody can say Blackpine didn't try."

She poured one cup and held it out to me.

Steam curled off it, thin and golden.

The smell reached me a second later.

Honey, warm and thick.

And under the honey, something green and bitter, so faint that no one at the fire could have named it.

I knew it.

I had smelled it once, three years ago, when she pressed a cup into my shaking hands and said that I would spill the toast.

My whole body went cold.

"Eira?" Calista said gently. "Aren't you going to take it?"

She was smiling, her head a little to one side, the way she had smiled over every Feast of my childhood.

I could not tell whether she was a good liar or whether I had simply never looked.

Bram stepped up beside me.

He did not take the cup.

He took the whole flask out of the basket instead, unscrewed the cap, and sniffed.

His smile vanished.

"Huh," he said. "That's an odd honey."

"It's a family recipe."
