Chapter 22: The Post Comes Down
Garrick sent for me the next morning, and I went to Ironwood in daylight, on foot, with Jory holding my hand.
The yard was full.
Every wolf of Ironwood stood in a wide ring on the gravel, quiet and hatless, with their children in front.
At the center of the ring stood the post.
It was a thick grey pole with iron rings bolted into the wood, and the ground at its foot was still stained.
My feet stopped on their own.
Jory squeezed my fingers.
"It's okay, Mama," he said. "He's going to do something."
Garrick came out of the front door in his shirtsleeves.
He held a heavy axe in both hands.
He walked to the post without looking at me, and he swung.
The first blow bit deep into the wood.
He swung again, and again, with his jaw clenched and the sweat running down his face.
On the sixth blow, the post cracked.
On the seventh, it fell across the gravel with a groan, and the iron rings rang on the stones.
He dropped the axe.
Nobody in the ring spoke.
He turned and faced me, and then he did a thing I would not have believed if I hadn't seen it.
He went down on one knee in the dirt.
"This yard is where it happened," he said.
His voice carried to every wall.
"Every wolf here stood and watched, and not one of you spoke. I did not speak for you. I will not do that again."
A woman near the front put her hand over her mouth.
"As of today, no wolf of Ironwood is lashed without the Council hearing the accused first," Garrick said. "Not on my word. Not on anyone's. I have written it into the pack law, and I signed it this morning."
