Chapter 22: What I Want First
"The pack has called you the guest for ten years," the oldest elder said. "We were wrong. The chair at the Alpha's left has been empty a long time, and the law says it belongs to the Alpha's mate. We would like to know if you will sit in it."
Every eye in the meadow turned my way.
I looked at Darian.
He had gone very still, with his hands at his sides.
He was not going to help me.
He had promised, and I could see what it cost him.
"What does the Luna do?" I said.
The elder blinked.
"I'm asking," I said. "I've lived here ten years and I've watched Joan run this house. I've never once seen anyone say what the Luna does."
"She sits at the Alpha's table. She speaks for the pack's women at council. She..."
"I do all that already, except the table."
A few people laughed.
"I mean it," I said. "I treat your cuts and your fevers. I know who's late with the pantry order. I'm not afraid of any of you. What I want to know is what I'd be saying yes to."
The oldest elder looked at the second elder, who shrugged.
"The pack's trust," the second elder said at last. "And its answers to you, when you ask for them."
"Then here's my answer." I turned and faced the east side. "I'd like to be asked."
"We are asking," the oldest elder said.
"Not by you. By the person who has the right to." I looked at Darian, and his eyes were bright. "And not tonight, in a field, with everyone watching and a bond doing half the talking. I want to be asked in a kitchen, over food, by someone who can wait for the answer."
