Chapter 14: Everyone Knew
I turned the cake cart so the top tier faced the room.
The news camera zoomed in.
On the smooth gold top, I'd piped four words in dark chocolate.
"Get well soon. Verbier."
A few people laughed, confused.
Phoebe went very still.
"What is this?" Susan said sharply, coming up the steps. "Get her off the stage."
"Brooke," I said into the microphone.
At the side of the room, by the AV desk, Brooke pressed a key.
The Ferris wheel on the screen disappeared.
In its place was Phoebe in a white ski jacket on a mountain, goggles pushed up, grinning.
The date sat in the corner, in plain white text.
March 14, 2023.
"That's Verbier, Switzerland," I said. "Phoebe's fundraiser page says that was the week of her third round of chemo."
The screen changed.
Phoebe in a hot tub with a glass of prosecco.
Phoebe with a fondue fork, laughing, cheeks pink.
