Chapter 5: Locked In

I tried the door first, because a woman who has lost her memory still tries the door.

The deadbolt needed a key on both sides.

I tried the windows next.

They opened four inches and stopped, held by a steel bracket that someone had screwed into the frame.

We were on the ninth floor anyway.

I stood in the middle of the living room in Elliot's robe and said, quietly, "Okay."

If Colin was watching, he would see a confused woman.

So I searched the apartment like a confused woman, opening drawers and looking surprised, until I got to the desk in the corner.

It had three drawers.

The bottom one was locked.

A man who keeps nothing else locked in his apartment locks one drawer.

I took a hairpin from my hair, which was the only useful thing the clinic had ever given me, and bent it against the edge of the desk.

I had learned this at fifteen, from Bridget, who had learned it so we could get into our father's liquor cabinet.

The lock gave in under a minute.

Inside the drawer lay a thin black tablet and a stack of printed photographs held with a rubber band.

I turned the tablet on.

The code was zero, four, one, nine.

Elliot used the same four digits for everything.

The home screen had one folder, named *RAW*.

I opened it.

It held a hundred and forty-one video files, each named with a date.
